Resignation of Utah-Based Crown Holder

Recently, significant news emerged from Utah when the 2023 Miss USA, Noelia Voigt, resigned – a first since the pageant began in 1952. The situation intensified when Miss Teen USA, UmaSofia Srivastava, also relinquished her crown – after which the next runner-up refused to take her place.

These events mark a potential turning point for the pageant industry. But even more importantly, they are a call for companies across the spectrum – including multifamily – to be more intentional about the quality of their workplaces.

A Wake-Up Call to Focus on People First

During her departure, Miss USA Noelia Voigt cited a toxic work environment and its severe impact on her health, including struggles with anxiety and related physical symptoms.

Voigt’s complaints were similar to those commonly heard during The Great Resignation – a post-pandemic phenomenon that peaked in 2023. It involved a mass exodus of employees leaving their posts for better mental health and work-life balance.

“What happened to Miss USA is disheartening and should be a wake-up call for all companies,” shares Kim Baker, Director of Human Resources at RealSource Properties.  “When employees feel supported and valued, their performance improves.  If they don’t, they will find a company that better aligns with their values.”

Elsewhere in Utah: A Winning Culture

RealSource Properties, coincidentally also in Utah, has also recently garnered national attention. Recognized as the #1 Best Places to Work in Multifamily for 2024, the company demonstrates the importance of focusing on a supportive and effective work environment.

“A thriving culture is the cornerstone of our success. We've seen firsthand how focusing on our people leads to better outcomes for everyone,” states Kelly Randall, President of RealSource Properties.

No Shortcuts to a Thriving Workplace

The #1 Best Places to Work in Multifamily accolade reflects nearly a decade of diligent efforts to foster a vibrant culture. The company has been deliberate in its approach, enlisting detailed annual surveys through an external party.

Resulting adjustments in compensation, technology, communication, benefits, and job roles have kept RealSource Properties moving up in its evaluation scores – and overall company performance.

“Our ongoing commitment to improving workplace practices has ensured that we attract and retain the best talent. It's been about making sure our team feels valued and supported every day,” adds Teresa Rose, Senior Vice President of Property Management at RealSource Properties. “Whatever we invest in this effort comes back tenfold. While we’re a real estate company, it’s our people that are our greatest asset.”
